A debate is by nature argumentative and driven by a strong, contestable, and unwavering thesis. Find your point and stick to it, although you ought to concede some points if others point out flaws in your argument. To that end, we will be studying logical fallacies, and you will be expected to incorporate these terms into your counter-arguments. Also, it’s important to note how the online medium changes the debate format. Instead of standing up in front of a group and presenting your arguments, you sit down and vie for the attention of your audience. Your points ought to be concise, well supported, and sometimes entertaining. (Otherwise your audience might go watch cat videos instead!) The Task: Consider the importance of you angle by addressing the following in your original post: ● Why is your angle on economic justice the most crucial? ● What is your authority on this topic? What is the authority of your sources? How impressed will your audience be with these sources of authority? (Ethos.) ● How logical is your angle? What reasons for supporting your argument will persuade your audience? (Logos.) ● How emotionally invested is your audience? How can you draw them in emotionally – make them laugh, cry, or sympathize? (Pathos.) Consider the following factors when you write your counter-arguments. Respectfully point them out. ● Question the authority of the sources provided as evidence. ● Offer evidence that contradicts what the original post asserts. ● Be friendly!
